This project is bittersweet for many reasons and quite frankly it’s been really hard to complete not only the project but this blog post. So I’m going to start a month prior to the whole world changing in March. On February 2020 my husband and I had to take an emergency trip to see his dad who passed away shortly after we arrived. After planning, leading and making the decisions for funeral and burial arrangements my husband and I needed a break and quite frankly a pick me up. So, I did what I normally do when traveling. Visit local fabric stores!
I purchased this blue fabric along with a BEAUTIFUL sequin fabric at the Detroit Fabric Company. The owner had just opened and things were not fully set up yet so I couldn’t get the details on the fabric. I didn’t have anything in mind to make with it, but I knew it was versatile enough to make anything I wanted. Shortly after we returned home, the pandemic hit and everything just went downhill for me. Initially, I couldn’t put my finger on it but things got really dark. It wasn’t just the Corona Virus. Quite honestly I’m still working things through.
During that time I struggled to make anything. Some days all I could do was read my bible. I felt lead to do a study on who I was “IN CHRIST” of the New Testament. And that’s when something ignited in me. Slowly there were words that just lit me up and broke the sadness that overwhelmed. I finally started to feel like i was climbing out of the pit I was in. Then, the design ideas started flowing and that;s when I knew I needed to make something that described coming out triumphant in this journey and also remind me who I was while I was wearing it…
And the blue jean graphic print dress was born. Below is a list of the words that I felt represented who I was in the dress. Feel free to read on yout own time and encourage yourself:
