Decoding Selfish Sewing: A Stitch in Time

As a full-time fashion designer I can tell you first hand that the days are long and the time to sew for yourself is short. If you are a  seamstress, tailor or sew for hire in any capacity there is little to no time to sew for yourself. I find that after I’ve sewn for others consistently, I can feel my creativity light bulb get dim and  joy slowly getting sucked out of me. LOL

In all transparency, I have noticed if I go too long in this state, frustration and irritability set in and it’s harder for me to focus.  What can get me back into creating with joy? SELFISH SEWING!

Selfish sewing does not mean you sew in a way that does not honor your self worth, family, peers or the environment. It is literally a form of self care by taking the time out to create and sew something for yourself, use the best and most beautiful fabric you want and indulge in the beauty of the art of sewing.

In time you will find that you’ve gotten your “SEWJO” back and you can get back to sewing for others with joy and service.

Pictured in the photo are my latest “Selfish Sewing” makes. Simplicity S9602 Kaftan and MimiG Style S9701 Bodycon Dress. My new favorite go to patterns!

So today I give you permission to give yourself some grace and set some time to make something for yourself.

Stay Sewcial. Stay Inspired.

XO Sebrina
