Beyond the Instructions: Personalizing Commercial Patterns
if you have ever sewn, bought or seen a commercial pattern you know how they all start to look the same. You also notice the styling is also very basic. I notice how obvious it was starting to become and then I realized this is probably because patterns and the photo styling are meant to “fit” everyone.
Unfortunately, in doing so, patterns and photos don’t really capture the beauty that can be created when you put your own style and creativity to it. So here are a few things I do to add to a little “SAZON” in my commercial pattern makes:
CHECK THE DESIGN
Here’s where your inner designer can have fun with making a basic pattern your own. When you look at the line drawings on the back, do you see places where you can add a design feature? Maybe a different sleeve length or better yet a funkier sleeve? Maybe you can cut it a little bigger or smaller?
ADD SOME BLING
Here’s your chance to elevate a pattern and make it luxe! Go from “FUCCI” to “GUCCI”. LOL Take your simple top to the next level by adding some beautiful crystals, pearl details or a beautiful embroidered patch. Oh and don’t forget the gold details…they will always make a statement!
ADD SOME TRIMS
Faux fur, Peacock feathers, Colorful webbing and bias tape…you name it! The choice is yours and the possibilities are endless! Consider even branching out into the upholstery section and get you some gimp! You’d be surprised how many things you can add to a garment to elevate a look.
There are many ways to make a basic commercial pattern your own. The beauty of it is that each person has the ability to being their own story, style, and creativity. This makes it impossible for anyone to put you in a box! If you feel like patterns are too confining I hope you consider these things and give them a chance. I would love to see you blossom into who you were created to be…a amazing sewist, designer or anything else you set your heart to.
