First Stitch: Sewing Machine Essentials

Now more than ever, there are hundreds, if not thousands of at home sewing machine options to consider.  While I know it may be overwhelming, I hope this quick reference guide can make the shopping experience a little easier.

There are a few things I think are important to know before making your sewing machine purchase so let’s get started:

Needs vs Wants

Yes, I know everyone wants the top of the line ”Bentley” model sewing machine but if you are in the beginning of your sewing journey this may not be the best option. What you need, available stitches, the basic straight, zigzag and buttonhole stitches, speed control. (You can always upgrade later when you are more experienced with sewing.)

Goal

Do you want to sew crafts, add to your personal wardrobe, sew for profit? Each one of these call for different sewing machines. Part-time or full-time sewing needs to be considered as well.

Price Point

Its important to know that more expensive, does not necessarily mean higher quality. So dust off the budget, consider your price range and stick to it.

I want to point out that this is not an exhaustive list of things to consider. However, it is a good start when you are starting your sewing journey. One last thing I want to point out.  Whether you are a part-time or full-time sewing enthusiast (or what I like to call a “Sewcialist” wink-wink) sewing takes commitment, the passion ebbs and flows but don’t be discouraged. Commit to being kind, gentle and patient with yourself in those times where the passion is not as high.

So now that you have identified your needs, goals and price point, let’s check out some choices. Click here for sewing machine recommendations.
